Thea Aim of this group is to present, promote and produce wonderful work for the people of Portsmouth through the presentation of work in a restored theatre, the use of working spaces in the Back Lot for participatory and outreach activities, and the development of strategic partnerships providing a creative powerhouse at the heart of the city.

This leads to the following commitments:

PRESENTING touring work on a variety of scales, using the flexible staging and auditorium, we plan to host work that includes: - drama, music theatre, musicals opera, dance and circus.

PROMOTION describes the development of an audience for theatre in Portsmouth, and skills for participants, community and artists. Over the last 20 years there has been no high quality, sustained provision for theatre in the City.

PRODUCTION is the way we describe our role as an asset for artists in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas. We will not be a repertory company but we will expect to co-produce with subsidised and commercial producers. The Back Lot will include a space for a resident company and also space for a post graduate company from the University.

WONDER sits at the heart of great art. Wonder sits at the heart of discovering talent and excitement of expressing oneself through art.

THE PEOPLE OF PORTSMOUTH means building on our record of work, reflecting the cultural and social diversity of Portsmouth so that all sorts and registers of voices will be heard at the centre of our artistic life. There must be no barriers from the “stately home” aspect of the place, or difficult physical access, or from an exclusive view of art and culture.
